Beyond Scriptures

Beyond Scriptures

I have always been interested in scriptures, not just on the account given but on the account not given. I try to imagine the life of patriarchs of old, the lives they led not recorded in scriptures and merge it with what we know of their lives in scriptures. Like what was going through the mind of Peter when he cried out to be crucified not like His master as he was not worthy of such a death. How long did it take Esther to decide, such that for every step she took, she resolutely reaffirmed, "...if I perish, I perish (Esther 4:16)". What was the state of mind of David when in the cave, within himself he wrote... "Open thou my eyes oh Lord, that I may behold, wondrous things... (Psalm 119:18)" Did he cry out with a loud voice, was he in sober reflection, was it in an act of worship or was he in joyful jubilation. What prompted the three Hebrew boys to tell the most powerful man of their time "...Oh King we are not careful to answer you in this matter... (Daniel 3:16)"

What fuelled their passions, how were they convicted of their faith, what did they believe? Paul affirmed, "...I know Whom I have believed... (2 Tim 1:12)", do we know who we have believed? Do we really know Him? What Walk did Enoch walk that God took him (Gen 5:21-24)? What did he do or know that made God the creator of the world to say... No, this servant of mine will not taste death.

For I long to walk in those long and cold hallways filled with pillars and fear and see the look in the eyes of Esther when she defiled all odds, I would love to see with the eyes of Elisha when he cried "...My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof"(2 Kings 2: 11-12). I would like to understand what it felt like for the lame man who after thirty eight years found use for his legs (John 5:5-9) or blind Bartimaeus who after decades saw for the first time (Mark 10:46-52), what did he see first, how did he interpret beauty, everyday, how he must have spoken about it, how grateful he must have been. I always try to wonder, what went through their minds, what was the seeds of their belief and whom they have believed.

Remarkably, around us today, miracles still happen, lives are still being transformed, hearts touched and souls saved but like most persons of their time, we all are standing akimbo in a dying world, oblivious of happenings around us and the interpretations thereof, oblivious of decayed morals and bending values, misplaced priorities and sinking footings.

What is happening?

Beyond scriptures upon which we take our reference, who are we? Living epistles it is said our lives should be - Are we? If Paul was to write about a new epistle, would you feature in today's world? Would I merit a chapter in that book.

Who are you? Who am I?
