ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS

2 Timothy 2:3–4; Ephesians 6:10–18; Philippians 3:13–14; Hebrews 10:23–25; 1 Corinthians 16:13

INTRODUCTION: THE CALL TO ADVANCE, NOT RETREAT

Dearly beloved brethren, the Christian life is not a passive journey—it is a battle, a spiritual warfare and a forward march. Just as soldiers march to war, “Onward Christian Soldiers” is a clarion call to all who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ to unite in faith and persevere as we move forward to conquer territories and claim dominions despite the opposition of the devil and his cohorts. We are enlisted in God’s army, not to stand idle, but to advance His kingdom with courage, discipline, and unity. 2 Timothy 2:3–4: “You therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life…” To be a true Christian is to be a soldier under Jesus Christ, and soldiers are known for endurance, obedience, and focus.

1. THE IDENTITY OF THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER: INVINCIBLE IN CHRIST

Before we can march onward, we must understand who we are. As Christian soldiers we are invincible, because every battle is fought from the point of victory already won for us at the Cross of Calvary by our Commander, Jesus Christ. But we can only enforce our victory if we put on the right armour and fight under His banner. Knowing these facts should give us confidence.

A. We are enlisted by God. See John 15:16: “You did not choose Me, but I chose you…” So, you are not in this battle by accident. God has called, chosen, and commissioned you.

B. We are operating under the Command of Christ. See Colossians 1:18: “…that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Christ is our Commander-in-Chief. A true soldier does not act independently but follows divine instruction. Christ is our leader, so we must follow His direction.

C. We are marked by discipline. See 1 Corinthians 9:25–27. Every true believer must live a life of self-control, sacrifice, and spiritual focus. A soldier without discipline is a danger to the army. Likewise, a believer without discipline cannot advance spiritually.

2. THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD: OUR DEFENSE AND OFFENSE

We are called to put on the whole armour of God. Not some, but the whole armour of God and move forward under the leadership of Christ Jesus in this spiritual warfare knowing that victory is sure. Ephesians 6:10–18. Every Christian soldier must be properly equipped with the whole armour of God:

  • Belt of Truth – Integrity and truthfulness
  • Breastplate of Righteousness – Right standing with God
  • Shoes of the Gospel of Peace – Readiness to spread the gospel
  • Shield of Faith – Protection against doubt and fear
  • Helmet of Salvation – Assurance of salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit (Word of God) – Our offensive weapon

Without armour, a soldier is exposed. Without spiritual armour, a believer is defenseless.

3. UNITY: MARCHING TOGETHER

To move onward as Christian soldiers, unity is essential; we must avoid divisions in the church. No army wins a battle divided. Christianity is not a solo journey—it is a corporate walk. In  John 17:20-23, we see Jesus’ Prayer for Unity: Jesus prays that all believers may be one, as He and the Father are one, to serve as a witness to the world. Believers in Ephesians 4:3, were admonished to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace“. This verse emphasizes that active effort to maintain unity is a primary defense against spiritual attack. Also, 1 Corinthians 1:10_ appeals to believers to be “perfectly united in mind and thought,” leaving no room for divisions, which the enemy exploits. Hebrews 10:24–25: “…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” We strengthen each other through fellowship, prayer, and teaching. When believers walk in unity, the enemy loses ground.

4. FAITH: THE SHIELD OF THE SOLDIER

Faith is essential for Christian soldiers as it serves as a defensive shield against spiritual attacks, doubt, and fear, enabling believers to stand firm and fight the “good fight” with love and truth. It is the foundation for enduring hardship, maintaining discipline, and advancing against spiritual opposition, relying on God’s strength rather than one’s own. Mark 11:22–24: “And Jesus answered them, ‘Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.’” Ephesians 6:16: “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.“_

5. PERSEVERANCE: STEADFASTNESS IN THE FIGHT

The march forward requires firm standing. 1 Corinthians 16:13: “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” Perseverance is an essential part of our Christian lives. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) says, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him.” The scripture admonishes us to count it all joy when we meet trials of various kinds, for the testing of our faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Hebrews 10:23: “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering…” Steadfastness means not giving up when things are hard, not compromising when pressured, not turning back when discouraged. A soldier who retreats loses ground; a believer who perseveres gains victory.

6. THE WORD: STANDING ON GOD’S PROMISES

Victory is assured but we must stand on God’s promises. John 15:7: “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” 2 Timothy 3:16–17. The scripture equips us for every good work. The Word of God is our offensive weapon, the Sword of the Spirit.

7. PRAYER AND PRAISE: OUR LIFELINE TO HEADQUARTERS

Prayer is our communication line with headquarters (Heaven). 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.” In addition to prayers, praise is powerful—celebrate even in battle. A praying and praising soldier is a victorious soldier.

8. FORWARD MOVEMENT: PRESSING TOWARD THE GOAL

The Christian life is not stagnant—it is progressive. Philippians 3:13–14: “…forgetting those things which are behind… I press toward the goal…” No looking back at past failures, past sins, or past disappointments. Leave them behind. Focus on the goal: Christlikeness, eternal life, kingdom impact. A soldier marching forward does not keep turning back.

9. COMMITMENT TO THE CAUSE: LOYALTY TO THE END

Matthew 24:13: “He who endures to the end shall be saved.” Half-hearted Christianity cannot survive spiritual warfare. Luke 9:62: “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom…” Revelation 2:10: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” True soldiers do not quit—they finish the mission.

In conclusion, the march continues. “Onward Christian Soldiers” is not just a song, it is a divine command to: stand firm in faith, walk in unity, live in discipline, wear your armour, keep moving forward and stay committed to Christ. Romans 13:12: “…let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” Beloved Brethren, the battle is real, but victory is sure in Christ. So, do not retreat; do not give up; do not grow weary; march on. Fight on and stand firm. ONWARD, CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS!

PEACE ON EARTH.
