BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR
Text: Luke 10:25–37
Emphasis: Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves (Luke 10:36)
Narration:
In today’s Bible reading, the Samaritan exemplified true kindness by delaying his own business, spending his resources, and even risking his safety to help a man from a nation hostile to his own. He had every right to ignore the injured man and move on and would have been justified in the eyes of men, yet he chose kindness, love and compassion. Christ told this story to teach that a neighbour is not defined by language, religion, race, tribe, workplace, or place of worship. A neighbour is anyone God places in your path. Believers are to show genuine care and love for everyone, regardless of who they are or whether they express gratitude. Some may even respond with indifference or hostility, yet we are to be good to them.
In today’s world, socio-economic, ethnic, and political challenges have hardened many hearts. Yet, believers are called to be lights in a world overshadowed by unkindness. Being a good neighbour comes at a cost – it requires time, strength, and financial sacrifice. Sometimes those we help may not appreciate it or may even act against us out of envy or malice. Despite these challenges, the call to love our neighbour is not optional; it is a divine command. True rewards come not from men’s praises, but from faithful obedience to God. As Romans 2:7 reminds us, God blesses those who do good persistently with a sincere heart.
Beloved, ensure that every act of kindness from you, no matter how small or costly, honours God and reflects His love in a world desperate for compassion. Let us be steadfast in helping others, showing mercy and generosity even when it is inconvenient or unacknowledged. In doing so, we fulfill God’s command (Matthew 5:43-48) and become vessels of His grace to those around us.
